...SOMEONE SAYS THAT YOU ARE WELL SPOKEN. AS AN EDUCATED BLACK MAN THIS HAPPENS TO ME ALOT AND I EXPECT IT FROM THE CAUCASIAN PERSUASION BUT WHEN YOU HEAR IT FROM YOUR OWN KIND ITS DOWNRIGHT INSULTING. ONE OF MY FRIENDS WHO HAPPENS TO BE LATIN SAID IT ABOUT ME AS A COMPLIMENT AND EVENTHOUGH I KNOW SHE DIDNT MEAN TO OFFEND ME, SHE WAS HAVING A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING WHY IT OFFENDED ME. ANOTHER BLACK CO-WORKER SAID IT TO ME BEFORE AND I JUST COULDNT BELIEVE THOSE WORDS CAME OUT HER MOUTH. I MEAN, HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO TALK? ITS SO FUNNY THAT THE MEDIA ALWAYS MENTIONS HOW WELL SPOKEN OBAMA IS AND THEY HAVE NEVER SAID THAT ABOUT ANYBODY ELSE THAT WAS RUNNING!!! IS HILLARY CLINTON NOT WELL SPOKEN, HOW ABOUT MCCAIN, MIT ROMNEY??? LET ME KNOW HOW YALL FEEL ABOUT THIS!!!

I feel your pain. I don't get offended anymore because I'm use to it. I've learned that the statement is a bottom line "Back handed compliment!" You have to chalk it up to peoples ignorance. It comes in many forms as well. What the problem is, is these people have never interacting with anyone like you before. So they think, they are doing you a favor by making the ridiculous statement. I say take it for what it's worth; "NOTHING!" I give it right back to them, "I'm sorry to say this but I thought all people of so-so origin where this way or that way." You are alright. While they are standing there looking like boo-boo the fool and what ever they say next, like "What was that supposed to mean?" You tell, I'm glad you asked that because I was thinking the same when you called yourself complimenting me by saying I'm well spoken. If they are really cool with you, then break it down for them. That is an insult, not a compliment. I am college educated and I read, very well, I might add. We represent one of the most diverse cultures in this world. We are like cameleon's we adapt and overcome, we are what we need to be according to the situation and circumstances.

Interesting....I guess it all comes down to the stereotypes that are promoted and bought in to by people.
I grew up in Alabama...so, I had a lot of people telling me that I "talk white"....uhhh...yeah. I'm a 38 year old single black woman who owns her home and has no kids....So, often I get hit with...."you ain't got no kids, what's wrong with you?" or "can't you get a man?"
So, not only do I "talk white".....I've been accused of being gay and/or sterile....uhhh...yeah, whatever.
I have learned to overlook the ignorant because I got tired of trying to educate them.

We weren't supposed to be able to read, write or enunciate. Point blank.

I don't really get offended if another minority says it to me. It would only piss me off if they told me I was 'trying to be white.' Now, when a white person says 'you're really educated' or 'that was a really intelligent thing you said,' then I get ticked. Because you know what they're really saying is 'wow. you're really smart for a black person.'
